Polysporin Sun Burn Itch

Sun Burn itch

Sunburns are your body's way of warning you that you've gotten a dangerous amount of sun exposure. When the amount of sun exceeds the amount of protective melanin – the body's defence against UV radiation – the skin reddens, burns, or even blisters. A common effect caused by sunburn is a persistant, unbearable itch, which often appears a couple of days after the initial sun damage.

People with naturally darker skin have more melanin, however everyone, regardless of skin tone, would benefit from proper sunburn prevention and care.

Signs of Sunburn :

  • People experiencing sunburn often have skin that is red, swollen, hot, or sore to the touch.
  • Have a doctor or health care professional look at the sunburn if you notice a rash, itching or fever, or if blisters appear.

Prevention Tips :

Like any burn, it will take time to heal. Pain relievers, cold water compresses, and baths can help with symptoms. Skin hydrating and moisturizing creams may also temporarily remove pain. Soap should be kept clear of burned areas as it may contain harsh detergents, which act as irritants. POLYSPORIN® Itch Relief Lotion can also help soothe the skin and relieve pain.

The best advice for sunburn is to avoid it completely. Here are some additional things to consider:

  • Wear a sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher whenever you are outdoors, and reapply it every 2 hours or after swimming, towel drying, perspiring heavily or washing.
  • Don't rely just on sunscreen – clothes, hats and sunglasses provide additional protection.
  • Seek shade, particularly when the sun’s rays are the strongest from 11 am to 4 pm
  • Don't just worry about the sun in summer, as UV is a year-round problem.
